How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they perform different functions but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is easy to here test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a failed G28 sensor include read more an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when you're in gear. 5. Tachometer
